XYLITOL

Xylitol is a natural carbohydrate-based substance that is classified as a pentitol-type sugar alcohol in the organic chemical system. The term sugar alcohol means that the xylitol molecule has no reducing groups; all five carbon atoms of the molecule are bound to OH groups. The sweetness of xylitol is almost the same as that of sucrose. This property, together with the negative heat of solution of xylitol (i.e. the cooling sensation it gives in the mouth), makes it a suitable filler in chewing gum. The caloric value of xylitol is about 2.4 kcal/g (while the caloric value of sucrose is almost 4 kcal/g).

Xylitol still produces calories after consumption, which is slightly lower than sucrose, at about 2.4 kcal/g (about 60% of sucrose). Its sweetness is comparable to sucrose (about 90% of sucrose), so it is a nutritive sweetener among sugar substitutes. It has a lower impact on blood sugar, so it is often used by diabetic people.
